SEKONIC L-508

CONTACT::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Sekonic calls it “the only light meter you’ll ever need”.

They’re not kidding.

My wife turned me on to these back when I was in school. She had recently started grad school at Savannah College of Art and Design and had gotten the chance to play with one of these when the Sekonic rep was there to demo their wares for all the burgeoning peons of photography.

Before this I had a Minolta light meter which did the job just fine, but the L-508 included both incident and spot meter functions in one meter. And I do actually use both functions regularly. As soon as I could I convinced my parents that I needed to have this light meter and had Campus Camera order one for me. I still use that one today. I love it so much that I got one for work as well. It’s one of the few pieces of equipment that we haven’t replaced in the last 10 years.

Today the current equivalent model is the L-758DR and it retails for about $500 (unless you’re shooting movies you can ignore the $700 L-758C). The L-758DR appears to have most of the same functions as my L-508. I’m not sure what other abilities they’ve packed into it to warrant giving it a new name but I’m sure that like mine, it’s still worth every penny.
