I was hesitant to purchase this odd looking tripod at first. I was afraid that the off center middle column might be a problem. But then I thought about it and realized that most of time when I’m using a tripod for 35mm I end up needing some super weird position that has an abnormal center of gravity anyway (like the one pictured below). So why not go with a tripod designed for maximum range of movement. In that area the Gitzo Explorer does not disappoint.
This tripod is not only designed to easily assume strange positions, but it’s also designed to do it quickly. The off center middle column is part this design. Because it’s not in the center it can immediately be positioned in a variety of ways without having to be removed and then reattached horizontally.
The legs, also are quick to position and lock in place. They do not have prescribed stopping points like every other tripod I’ve ever owned. You position the legs wherever YOU want to.
I bought the 6X Carbon version of this tripod. Expensive, yes. But those extra few pounds are the difference between me taking the tripod or leaving it in the studio.
