This is an impressive, professional grade tele zoom.
All metal construction. Silent Wave motor. And most importantly, VIBRATION REDUCTION. In my opinion, that last point is the only reason to buy this lens. Otherwise you get the same optical performance out of the much cheaper (as well as smaller and lighter) 80-200mm AF D.
If you tend to use this focal range mostly outdoors in broad daylight then I wouldn’t bother with this one, since you’re virtually assured enough light to keep your shutter speeds nice and fast. Get the 80-200mm AF D instead. If however, you need this focal range for indoor use, especially in dimly lit settings where your subject isn’t going to be moving around a whole lot, this lens is definitely worth it.
A lot of people mistakenly think that VR means it will be the perfect lens for shooting their kid’s nighttime football game. Well, if you like blurry players and sharp grass, then yes, it’s perfect. Remember, VR only dampens the photographer’s movement, not the subject’s.
So, wedding and corporate event photographers... pay attention: if you like to shoot sedentary objects in a cave, this is your lens. Everyone else, go check out the 80-200mm AF D.
